چکیده

This project examines how the expression granted by new musical interfaces can be harnessed to create positive changes in health and well-being. We are undergoing experiments to measure EEG dynamics and physical movements performed by participants who are using software designed to invite physical and musical expression of the basic emotions. The present demonstration of this system incorporates an expressive gesture sonification system using a Leap Motion device, paired with an ambient music engine controlled by EEG-based affective indices. Our intention is to better understand affective engagement, by creating both a new musical interface to invite it, and a method to measure and monitor it. We are exploring the use of this device and protocol in therapeutic settings in which mood recognition and regulation is a primary goal.

Measuring Musical Engagement Using Expressive Movement and EEG Brain Dynamics

We have developed a method for studying musical engagement using simple expressive rhythmic “conducting” gestures matching the musical pulse. Expert and nonexpert participants attempted to communicate the feeling of heard musical excerpts using simple rhythmic U-shaped hand/arm “conducting” gestures that animated, in real time, the movement of a spot of light on a video display, while body moti...

Towards an Affective Gesture Interface for Expressive Music Performance

This paper discusses the use of ‘Pogany’, an affective anthropomorphic interface, for expressive music performance. For this purpose the interface is equipped with a module for gesture analysis: a) in a direct level, in order to conceptualize measures capable of driving continuous musical parameters, b) in an indirect level, in order to capture high-level information arising from ‘meaningful’ g...

Affective Jukebox: A Confirmatory Study of EEG Emotional Correlates in Response to Musical Stimuli

This paper presents a proof-of-concept pilot study investigating whether 2-dimensional arousal-valence correlates determined from electroencephalogram (EEG) readings can be used to select music based on the affective state of a user. Self-reported emotional states are used to evaluate a system for estimating arousal and valance from EEG by means of music selection from a real-time jukebox, with...

Musical neurofeedback for treating depression in elderly people

We introduce a new neurofeedback approach, which allows users to manipulate expressive parameters in music performances using their emotional state, and we present the results of a pilot clinical experiment applying the approach to alleviate depression in elderly people. Ten adults (9 female and 1 male, mean = 84, SD = 5.8) with normal hearing participated in the neurofeedback study consisting ...

Learning to Make Feelings: Expressive Performance as a Part of a Machine Learning Tool for Sound-Based Emotion Control

We propose to significantly extend our work in EEG-based emotion detection for automated expressive performances of algorithmically composed music for affective communication and induction. This new system involves music composed and expressively performed in real-time to induce specific affective states, based on the detection of affective state in a human listener. Machine learning algorithms...
